Developing ways to remind ourselves daily that God loves us comes with profound benefits. Meditation has been found in the Christian prayer tradition since the earliest centuries. With the added benefits of increased consciousness, lowered heart rate and blood pressure, we can grow closer to the heart of Jesus while helping our physical well being as well! Here is a brief and easy meditation that will help you to grow spiritually and healthier.
Make a conscious decision to perform this every day, preferably 3 times per day. Morning (if you work, before work), Mid-day (lunch break) and Evening (after work). Leave this paper in a place where you will see it daily, set a timer for mid-day to remind yourself.
Sit in silence, preferably outside in nature where you can hear, see, and/or smell the outdoors. If not possible, then sit where you can see out a window. Sit up straight, feet flat on the floor, hands in your lap, relax your muscles and start to clear your mind.
Begin deep breathing by drawing air in by counting slowly to 3 and then out by counting slowly to 6. Do this at least 2 times.
Continue this breathing but as you draw air in repeat these words to yourself, “God loves me” and as you blow air out repeat these words to yourself, “I am a special and loved child of God”
Do this for at least 1 minute to start and increase to several minutes as you do this more often. For you extroverts who can’t sit still, set a timer (but don’t look at it, just wait for the beep). When the timer goes off, continue at least 2 more repetitions to wind down. Eventually you won’t need a timer as you will just do this however long you need to.
You may not feel like anything is happening, but keep at it and after more time and commitment you will know. We are cultivating a deeper relationship with God to allow him to be present with us in daily situations.
During coffee and donuts next week, discuss this experience with other parishioners.
More to come soon… we will build on this experience.
